RESUMO

Há poucas décadas, um novo enfoque tem se desenvolvido na área da saúde, o cuidado paliativo, destinado a pacientes com doenças incuráveis em fase terminal. Os cuidados aos pacientes terminais com câncer ampliaram-se a fim de oferecer aos pacientes e seus familiares suporte para conviver com sua condição, com o foco orientado para promover conforto e alivio da dor. A cavidade oral dos pacientes com câncer de cabeça e pescoço, em virtude da doença e terapias, é o primeiro local com dor e perda da função, necessitando de intervenção adequada para controlar os problemas orais e proporcionar melhora da qualidade de vida. Este artigo relata um caso de paciente com câncer avançado de cabeça e pescoço submetido aos cuidados paliativos odontológicos. Por meio de intervenções simples, foi possvel a manutenção da higiene oral e a ausência de infecção e dor, permitindo a melhora da qualidade de vida desse paciente. ABSTRACT

A few decades ago, a new approach if it has developed in the area of the health, the palliative care, destined the patients with incurable illnesses in terminal phase. The care to the terminal patients with cancer had been extended in order to offer to the patients family support to deal with this condition focused in the relief of pain. The oral cavity in head and neck cancer patients, by virtue of disease and its therapies, is the first site of pain and loss of function, needing adjusted intervention to control the oral problems and to provide improvement of the quality of life. This paper describes a case report of head and neck cancer advanced patient submitted to palliative care dentistry. Through of simple interventions was possible the maintenance of oral hygiene, and absence of infection and pain, allowing the improvement of the quality of life of this patient.
