RESUMO

O transplante de medula óssea tem se tornado o tratamento de escolha para muitas doenças que afetam a produção da célula-mãe hematopoiética e elementos do sistema imunológico. Os pacientes pediatricos receptores de transplante geralmente apresentam alterações bucais em conseqüência da severa imunodepressão, induzida pela quimioterapia e/ou radioterapia. Essas manifestações bucais podem ser graves e interferir nos resultados da terapêutica médica com complicações sistêmicas, aumentando o tempo de internação hospitalar, os custos do tratamento, além de afetar diretamente o conforto do paciente. ABSTRACT

The bone marrow transplant has become the treatment of choice for many diseases that affect the stem cell production and the elements of the immunologic system. The transplant pediatric patients receivers generally present oral manifestations in consequence of the severe immunosupression, necessary not for the transplant be rejected by the host immunologic system and caused by chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. These oral manifestations can be serious and they may interfere with the results of the medical therapeutic and lead to systemic complications, increasing the hospital internment time, the costs of the treatment and directly affecting the patient's comfort.
