RESUMEN

La introducción de cualquier tipo de material de obturación endodóntica en el mercado odontológico requiere de una serie de pruebas o ensayos preliminares que permitan analizar sus propiedades biológicas tanto in vitro como en animales de laboratorio antes de su aplicación de rutina en humanos; esto último requiere de ensayos o pruebas clínicas preliminares que incluyan tratamientos endodónticos en cohortes de pacientes adecuadamente seleccionados y controlados que efectivamente requieran del tratamiento mencionado. Estos ensayos deben responder fielmente a los preceptos de ática y a las normas establecidas por los organismos de control internacionales para la prueba de biomateriales en humanos. En esta cuarta y última entrega se analizan los criterios utilizados para la evaluación del comportamiento clínico de los materiales de obturación endodóntica, como último paso dentro de un programa regular y sistemático de investigación y previo a su aplicación de rutina en la clínica. SUMMARY

The success of the root canal therapy depends of many different factors. These include, among others, the physical condition of the patient, the condition of the involved tooth and the periradicular tissues, the technical standard of the root fillings and the tissue compatibility of the filling materials. In this report, which is the last of a series of previous articles, we analyzed the clinical criteria to evaluate the outcome of the endodontic treatment in relation to the root canal filling material used. Since histologic parameters are not possible to use as a routine procedure in humans, the evaluation criteria is generally based on the radiographic appearance of the periapical tissues coupled with the analysis of various clinical factors. Such type of assays should be conducted under well controlled conditions on selected patient cohorts, and in line with the ethic precepts established by the International Organisms of Human Dental Care.
