Objectives: A new mandibular motion tracking system (ManMoS) has been developed.
The aim of this study was to evalúate the measurement errors for ManMoS. Methods: FASTRAK, a three-dimensional motion tracking and digitizing equipment was uti- lized for the ManMoS. A motion data set was recorded in six-degrees-of-freedom with three coordinates (X, Y and Z) and three Euler angles (azimuth, elevation and roll). The measure- ment errors were examined for the tracking device itself and the whole system. In order to examine the accuracy of the whole system, a FASTRAK receiver was fixed on the lower dental arch and the motion of the left condyie was analyzed. An investigation was carried out of the system noise of ManMoS and reproducibility of the condylar point. Results: FASTRAK showed littie noise for the coordinates and the Euler angles. In the lin- ear measurements of 100mm and the angular measurements of 90.0 degrees, the average of error between the measured data and the actual valué ranged from -0.308mm to 0.136mm and from -0.134 degrees to 0.010 degrees respectively. The static noise in ManMoS as- sessed at the condylar point was less than 0.122 mm. For the reproducibility of the condylar positioning to ICP during the tapping, the standard deviations of each the X, Y and Z coordi- nates in twenty-five biting events were 0.102mm, 0.213mm and 0.198mm. The condylar path was well represented graphically on a CRT monitor. Conclusions: The accuracy of ManMoS seems to meet clinical demands satisfactorily. The system was simple to operate and recordings were made rapidly, as a consequence ManMoS was considered suitable for clinical examinations.
