Lack of estrogen after menopause and reduced physical activity are the important factors
of pathogenesis of osteoporosis in the elderly women. We have compared contribution of estrogen and the activity
quantitatively. Experimental rats in cages of limited space were restricted their walking. Four groups are comprised
of Sham-Control, Sham-Restrained, OVX, and OVX-Restrained rats. Animals were sacrificed 15 weeks later, and femurs
and tibiae were examined for the morphological appreciation. OVX-Restrained rat group experienced the worst loss
of bone structure as well as the deteriorated bone quality and strength. Key words: Osteoporosis, ovariectomy, immobilization, bone quality, bone strength. |
