ABSTRACT | |
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst coated with fluoridated apatite (FAp-TiO2) was synthesized by adding a fluoride
ion to TiO2 coated with apatite (HAp-TiO2). This study investigated the antifungal and inhibitory effects of acrylic resin containing FAp-TiO
2 against Candida albicans. The specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=4) as follows: 1) acrylic resin (control); 2) acrylic resin containing
5% FAp-TiO2 (FAp); 3) acrylic resin containing 5% HAp-TiO2 (HAp); 4) acrylic resin containing 5% TiO2 (Ti). For the assay, C. albicans
cells were placed onto the specimens under UVA from a black light source. In both the antifungal activity and ínhibitory tests, there was a statistically significant
decrease was observed with FAp, HAp, and Ti when compared with the control (p<0.01). Scanning electron microscope observations revealed dents and irregular contours
in C. albicans in the FAp group. The results suggest that acrylic resin containing FAp-TiO2 has a strong antifungal effect and prevents the adhesion of C. albicans.
