ABSTRACT | |
We report a case of ankylosis in childhood treated by TMJ mobilization with preservation of the condyle and disc. The patient was a 9-year-old
boy with a history of a right condylar fracture at the age of 7 years. As the maximal mouth opening had markedly decreased, TMJ mobilization was performed at the age
of 13 years. We resected the bony adhesion, retaining the fractured condyle and disc in their displaced position. Five years after surgery, the patient had a maximal
mouth opening of 45 mm, as well as better contralateral and protrusive movements without any recurrence. Mandibular deviation has gradually improved.
Key words: TMJ ankylosis, childhood, condylar fracture, disc, retaining. |
