RESUMO

Objetivos: Avaliar a simetria das dimensóes largura e altura das órbitas direita e esquerda, em cranios humanos secos, relacionando tais medidas com idade e sexo. Planejamento do Estudo: Foram avaliacaos sessenla e dois cranios secos do acervo do Laboratorio de Anatomía Humana da Uniao Metropolitana de Educaçao e Cultura (UNIME), Lauro de Freitas - BA. A partir de reparos anatomicos presentes na regiao estudada, foram determinados pontos de referencia para as mensuraçóes, realizadas com o auxilio de um paquímetro digital. Todas as medidas foram tomadas por um único examinador. Resultados: Os resultados demostraram que nao houve diferenca estatística significativa entre as órbitas direita e esquerda dos cranios estudados. Tambem nao se encontrou diferenca estatística nas dimensóes das órbitas direita e esquerda, nem entre o sexo masculino e feminino entre si. Em re1açao a faixa etaria, a única diferença estatística ocorreu para largura da orbita direita dos cranios femininos. Para a largura da órbita esquerda e para dimensao vertical de ambas as orbitas dos cranios femininos e para todas as dimensóes orbitarias avaliadas, no sexo masculino, nao foram observadas diferencas significantes entre as diversas faixas etarias. Conclusoes: Existe uma simetria de Largura e altura entre as órbitas do lado direito e esquerdo, em ambos os sexos, nao ocorrendo igualmente diferenças relacionadas com idade. ABSTRACT

Objectives: To evaluate the symmetry in the vertical and horizontal dimensions of both the orbits in dry skulls, relating the findings to sex and age. Material and method: Sixty-two dry skulls from the human anatomy laboratory of the UNIME (Metropolitan Union of Education and Culture-Lauro de Freitas- Bahia- Brazil) were evaluated. Some points of reference for the measurements were determined, based in anatomical repairs in the area. A single examiner, using a digital paquimeter, took all the measures. Results: The results demonstrated that there was no statistically significant difference between the right and left orbits of the studied skulls. There was also no significant difference between sex in the dimensions of the right and left orbits. In relation to the age, there was statistically significant difference only for width of the right orbit of the female skulls. There ere no differences among age groups on the male skulls and also for the vertical dimension of the left orbit of the female group. Conclusions: There is symmetry in the right and left orbital dimensions in both sexes and no differences among age groups. Keywords: Facial symmetry; Skull symmetry; Facial esthetics.
