The patient was a 54-year old woman with type 2 diabetes. At the initial visit, periodontal examination revealed
that a probing pocket depth of > 4mm, accountsing for >30% of the entire region examined and the Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) was 30.4%.
X-ray photography revealed bone resorption of one third to three-quarters of the root length. This case was diagnosed as moderate periodontitis,
and periodontal therapy was initieted. Firstly in order to increase her motivation, the effects of brushing and the importance of blood
glucose control in periodontal treatment were explained repeatedly to enhance a better understanding of the importance of plaque control
and stabilization of blood glucose level through self-care. As a result, significant improvement in gingival inflammation was observed
after scaling and root planing. Flap operation was then contacted on the remaining inflammatory region, and maintenance was begun after
prosthetic therapy. In this case decreased risk for periodontal disease was ob served through excellent blood glucose control and appropriate
oral care. We believe that this result was obtained through the patient gaining a proper underatanding of the relationship between periodontal
disease and diabetes. (The Shikwa Gakuho, 108:128-136. 2008)
