ABSTRACT | |
We report a case of dysphagia where feeding function was improved by professional oral health care by a dental hygienist performed in at our
general hospital. The patient was diagnosed with middle-class nutritional disorder due to dysphagia. Nutritional consultation was sought and guidance given by a
registered dietitian. Professional oral health care was given by a dental hygienist for two months. The contents and quantity of meals consumed improved. Moreover,
the patient's weight increased, and choking, sputum and hoarseness disappeared. The results show the importance of understanding the physical and nutritional status
of the patient. We believe that a dental hygienist should participate in nutrition management and rehabilitation in dysphagia. (The Shikwa Gakuho, 109 185- 191, 2009)
