ABSTRACT | |
Dental caries status of deciduous teeth was investigated in 2-5 year-old Shanghai kindergarten children. Caries status of 1,022 children aged
2 to 5 years in the same kindergarten in Shanghai was investigated longitudinally over a 4-year period. Prevalence of dental caries, dft and Caries Severity Index
(CSI) were determined. Furthermore, 140 of the children (54 children aged 2 years and 86 children aged 3 years) were tracked for 3 years. Prevalence of dental caries,
dft and CSI showed no significant change over 4 years. However, indices increased by age bracket every year. The follow-up investigations over 3 years in 140 children
revealed that caries status worsened year by year, and no difference in increment of caries status was observed among two years as a whole, as well as each age group.
Increment of prevalence of dental caries in the 2-year old group was much higher than that in the 3-year old group in the first year, while there was no difference
in increment of dft or CSI between the two age groups. Caries status in this kindergarten showed no significant change over the four years. Prevalence of dental
caries increased remarkably from 2 to 3 years old. It is indicated that the prevention and treatment for dental caries of deciduous teeth should be enhanced in the
kindergarten of China.(The Shikwa Gakuho, 109 : 288-292, 2009)
